How it is built, by role

The same roles apply across the whole collection. Nothing in this block is specific to this site; what the site says about itself is quoted word for word below it.

  1. 1

    Edge network

Visitors reach a site through an edge layer: a content delivery network with a web application firewall in front of it.

  2. 2

    Application host

The edge talks to an application host that serves the site and renders its pages.

  3. 3

    Data

What the pages show comes from a relational database or, for a site pre-rendered at build time, from data files built into its release.

  4. 4

    Scheduled measurement

The collection measures its sites on a schedule: content dates and site health nightly, page counts read from each site’s sitemap weekly. Every reading is kept with its date. A site too large to re-walk is not re-measured, and shows no trend.

  5. 5

    Public status feed

A monitoring panel sends a signed report on uptime, deploys and backups once a day, and the Operations page publishes it. A figure on this page that comes from that report says so.

In the site's own words

Each passage is copied unaltered from a page the site publishes, with the address it was taken from and the date we took it. We add nothing between them.

“Goods Across Borders is a lookup-driven reference site for customs rules, commercial importing, and international parcel shipping.”

“The customs and import information that people actually need — what you can carry through an airport, what you can post internationally, what duties apply to a commercial shipment — is scattered across hundreds of government websites, in multiple languages, updated at unpredictable intervals, and almost never presented with clear sourcing.”

“Goods Across Borders exists to consolidate that information into a single, plainly written, fully sourced reference.”

“When we do not have a reliable source, we say “unknown” rather than guessing.”

Source: goodsacrossborders.com/about · retrieved 2026-10-24

“Duty-free allowances, prohibited and restricted items, cash declaration thresholds, and medication rules for travelers crossing international borders. Rules are indexed by item and by destination country so you can look up exactly what applies to your situation.”

“De minimis thresholds, standard duty rates by HS chapter and origin country, import documentation requirements, Incoterms reference, and country-level import profiles for commercial shipments. Includes a duty calculator for CIF-basis estimates.”

“Truth-first rendering: every section is conditional on its underlying source data; absent fields are omitted, never replaced with placeholder text.”

Source: goodsacrossborders.com/llms.txt · retrieved 2026-10-24

“Data is sourced exclusively from official customs authorities, international organisations (WCO, UPU, IATA, WHO), and carrier published policies.”

“Material corrections are noted in the changelog.”
